The Kids Are All Right: Oudin and Sock Capture U.S. Open Mixed Crown

September 10, 2011

Ah, to be 18 or 19 again: hanging out at the mall with your pals, getting ready for the school dance on Friday night, studying and doing homework.

Or doing something real cool, like winning a Grand Slam title!

That’s how Jack Sock and Melanie Oudin spent their Friday night, winning the U.S. Open mixed doubles championship over Gisela Dulko and Eduardo Schwank. It’s the first big title for either one of the young Americans, and while they won’t exactly be getting in a ton of opportunities to hone their mixed-dubs craft, it should be a huge confidence-booster for both of them. Oudin, in particular, really should benefit from this and perhaps it’ll help her restore belief in herself and her game.

There were a couple of American teenagers that won the French Open mixed title a few decades ago that seemed to turn out OK when it came to having a pro career: a guy by the name of John McEnroe and his partner Mary Carillo.

Perhaps you’ve heard of them?

Anyway, congrats Melanie and Jack!

I really enjoyed this match and the result. Maybe the joy of just winning or the joy of winning unexpectedly was written all over Jack and Melanie’s faces.
