Spears and Kops-Jones Capture Quebec Crown

September 19, 2011

There were some big doubles doings this past weekend with it being Davis Cup time on the men’s side. (Who expected Federer and Wawrinka to lose in Australia? Bit of a shock there.)

But while the men were battling it out for their home countries, the women were on the regular grind with events in Quebec City and Uzbekistan. I’m going to talk a bit about the Bell Challenge in Canada as a pair of American veterans captured their second title together.

Abigail Spears and Raquel Kops-Jones won the title over Jamie Hampton and Anna Tatishvili, 6-1, 3-6, (6). It’s a nice way to bounce back after falling in the first round at the last Grand Slam of the season to eventual U.S. Open champs Liezel Huber and Lisa Raymond, 6-2, 6-2.

Spears and Kops-Jones both maintain top-50 doubles rankings and won their first title (in their first final) together back in 2009 in Estoril. U.S. Open-early-round-loss aside, the past few months haven’t been too shabby as their results also include a runner-up appearance this summer in San Diego.

Could they be hitting their stride as the season starts wrapping up? It would be nice to see two players who have been fighting for a foothold on tour be rewarded with some quality wins.
