Frantisek Cermak: 25 Titles … and Counting?

September 20, 2011

Upon checking out the doubles draws on the ATP calendar this week, I noticed that at the BRD Nastase Tiriac Trophy event in Bucharest, Romania, that after Swede Robert Lindstedt and hometown favorite Horia Tecau, the second-seeded team is the Czech-Slovak team of Frantisek Cermak and Filip Polasek.

If this ends up a 1 vs. 2 final at the end of the week, it should be a good one as both pairs have had a solid 2011.

But that shouldn’t be too much of a surprise because solid is what Frantisek Cermak seems to do best. Did you know over the course of his doubles career, he’s managed to bag 25 titles? Any time you get into the double digits with title-winning, whether it’s in singles or dubs, you’re doing something right.

Cermak has been playing in ATP finals since 2002 when he first broke out with his partner Leos Freidl. Surprisingly over all that time, Cermak has never played in an ATP Masters final, nor at one of the Grand Slams. Still, to be a consistent threat on the Tour after years is a solid achievement and one his younger partner Polasek can look to benefit from. Title number 26–and possibly more–is within reach for Cermak, and consistently plugging away could increase his chances of getting to play for one of the game’s biggest prizes.
