Shanghai: Where the Doubles Draw Is No Joke

October 11, 2011

I was just checking out the draw for this week’s ATP stop, the Shanghai Masters 1000 tournament, and it’s serious business in that doubles draw.

Your finals contenders are all there, but what’s really indicative of how serious things are is some of the second-round matchups. Here’s a look at some:

Eric Butorac/Jean-Julian Rojer vs. Robert Lindstedt/Horia Tecau (8): Butorac and Rojer are gunning for the finals and with three titles won already this year, are in good position to get there. However, they have to take out teams like Lindstedt and Tecau, who haven’t exactly been slouches in ’11 themselves.

Simone Bolelli/Fabio Fognini vs. Michael Llodra/Nenad Zimonjic (3): The Italians have been playing lights out as of late, but there’s a reason Llodra and Zimonjic are where they are in the standings: They’re two of the best doubles players to come along in the last 15 years.

Mahesh Bhupathi/Leander Paes (4) vs. Alexander Peya/Carsten Kas: The “Indian Express” is playing like it’s the late ’90s/early ’00s all over again; you can say there reunion has been a successful one. But you can put Peya and Kas in the “hungry for the finals” category, too. The legends should be a little leery.
