Are the Bryan Brothers in a Slump?

October 14, 2011

Bob and Mike Bryan fell to the team of Mariusz Fyrstenberg and Marcin Matkowski in the quarterfinals of the Shanghai Masters event today, 12-10 in the match tiebreak. Great win for the Poles, who are among the teams making a push for the year-end championships.

But here’s an interesting tidbit: The Bryans haven’t won a title since Wimbledon. That’s about the equivalent of Federer or Nadal going months without a title.

Which begs the question: Are those two in a slump? I never thought I’d type those words about two of the game’s most dominant players, but it’s looking that way.

Granted, their losses have come to great teams, but still, most of the time they’re playing in a league of their own.

I wouldn’t say they’re done by any stretch of the imagination, but it is interesting to note this little drought. If they won the Australian next year I wouldn’t be surprised. But the teams are getting tougher out there, and it’s up to the Bryans to go back to doing what they do best: figuring out how to stay ahead of the pack.
