What if the Two Andys Had Stayed in the Basel Draw?

November 4, 2011

The Swiss Indoors is winding down for the weekend, and right now three of the four semifinal spots are taken. Odds lie with the fourth position being taken by number-two seeds Max Mirnyi and Danel Nestor.

Mirnyi and Nestor got safe passage into the quarterfinals as brothers Andy and Jamie Murrary couldn’t compete due to Andy’s gluteal strain.

Another Andy–Roddick, this time–also had to pull out of the doubles draw as his partner, fellow American Mardy Fish, developed an injury early on.

Now this tournament doesn’t feature as many doubles teams trying to make it to the year-end championships as the coinciding Valencia event does. Still, if Murray and Roddick would’ve played, and perhaps knocked off some top doubles teams, it could’ve had an impact on their singles play. Roddick still has an outside chance at making the YEC, and perhaps a nice doubles run could have helped his confidence.

Murray locked up his spot long ago, but perhaps another strong doubles showing with his big brother (they just won the Japan Open a few weeks ago) could have boosted his confidence even more going into the year’s final tournaments.

Singles players having success in doubles is always exciting to see. Too bad the opportunity was missed in Basel.
