The Bryan Brothers as Escape Artists

November 22, 2011

Whew, this edition of the ATP World Tour Finals has gotten off to some start!

Each match has either gone the distance or been an upset, or gone the distance and been an upset: kind of head-spinning!

Bob and Mike Bryan came back from a match point down yesterday to defeat Jurgen Melzer and Philipp Petzschner in the round-robin debut for both teams. They managed to avoid the opening loss suffered by Mahesh Bhupathi and Leander Paes, delivered to them by Robert Lindstedt and Horia Tecau. (You can catch more of my thoughts on the first couple of days at Tennis Grandstand, hot off the Internet presses today!)

Anyway, it seems we might have our first team out of the running as the “Indo-Pak Express,” Rohan Bopanna and Aisam-Ul-Haq Quereshi have fallen to Michael Llodra and Nenad Zimonjic. I haven’t seen the breakdown yet, where it comes down to sets won, but an 0-2 record doesn’t exactly help their chances. If that’s the case, it’s been a great year with three titles won, including a Masters 1000 crown in Paris. Here’s hoping they continue playing next year, even though there’s been some recent scuttlebutt suggesting otherwise.
