Nalbandian’s Davis Cup Fate Is in His Hands—and Schwank’s

December 2, 2011

Longtime singles star David Nalbandian will be playing the most crucial doubles match of his career this weekend in the Davis Cup final featuring host Spain against Argentina. Nalbandian and his partner, Eduardo Schwank, will take on Spaniards Fernando Verdasco and Feliciano Lopez.

This could be the most crucial rubber of the weekend as a split in the singles after the first day could become a reality. Or it could easily be 2-0 in favor of Spain. Either way, there’s a lot riding on the doubles match. Lopez, Verdasco and Nalbandian have all been in the fire before; it’ll be interesting to see how Schwank’s nerves hold up. Making your Davis Cup final debut against Spain in a live match is no laughing matter.

I’ll say it here: Whichever team wins this rubber wins the whole tie.

Nalbandian has been fairly open about how much winning a Davis Cup title would mean to him. He’s going to be in the pressure cooker in his efforts to make that dream a reality.
