Venus and Serena: Already Thinking of a Triple Double

December 5, 2011

It’s funny how the end of the tennis season can get you already looking for the start of the next a month away. That’s where I found myself today writing something else somewhere else, and in that story I mentioned something about Rafael Nadal and the Olympics.

That got me thinking about the London games, and I guess I’m not the only one as Venus and Serena Williams have recently announced their plans to defend their title. The sisters are going for their third Gold medal together of the millennium.

Even looking this far ahead, you’d have to consider them the favorites. Big challenges could come from whatever team Fed Cup finalists Russia and the Czech Republic put together as each nation has three players residing in the top 20 of the doubles rankings.

Perhaps the Williams sisters’ biggest obstacle, though, comes from another home team: Liezel Huber and Lisa Raymond. The reigning U.S. Open champions won’t necessarily cede that doubles spot to the Williams, which could make for some interesting matches in next year’s Slams. Either squad would be a Gold-Medal threat, something the sisters have a lot of experience with.
