Play On, Azarenka and Radwanska!

December 30, 2011

Where it seems on the men’s side that players on the upswing in their singles careers often let their burgeoning doubles rankings slip, the opposite seems to be true for the WTA’s stars.

Martinas Navratilova and Hingis, anyone?

Aside from being two of the most dominant singles players of their respective eras, they also managed to do quite OK for themselves on the doubles court, in what might be one of the biggest understatements of all time!

And in recent years, look at what happens whenever Venus and Serena Williams play doubles: big trophy lifting.

Currently, there are five players with top-25 rankings in singles and doubles, with top-10 singles players Victoria Azarenka and Agnieszka Radwanska among them. For those players pulling off that feat, my advice:

Keep doing what you’re doing!

This is contradictory to what I said in the prior post in regard to the men, but for the women an increased awareness of when to attack the net can make all the difference when it comes down to winning singles titles. That sense gets heightened playing doubles.

I think you’ll always see top singles players on the WTA Tour playing some doubles, which is a good thing for their games and the fans watching, too!
