Erlich and Ram: Comeback Kids of ’12?

January 4, 2012

You heard, or saw, it here first: Watch out for Jonathan Erlich and Andy Ram this year. The Israelis have advanced to the semifinals of the Chennai Open in India here in the first week of the season.

That’s not bad, getting two match wins in already, and can only help with boosting confidence going forward. It’s not as if this former Australian Open-winning pair really needs a boost in that regard, but it is good to even further reacquaint themselves after the struggles with injury Erlich has had over the past couple of years. They did pick up a win during the 2011 summer hard-court season in Winston-Salem, and before that, in Eastbourne prior to Wimbledon (thanks to commenter Anna for pointing that out!) their first victory together since 2008, the same year they took home the Aussie.

Erlich and Ram ended last year firmly entrenched in the top 20 of the team rankings, and there is plenty of room for them to go even higher within the next few months with all of the partnership switches taking place among their peers. A semifinal run–so far–in Chennai shows they’re on the right track.

They won Eastbourne in 2011, too. (Though it was an easy-to-miss victory, as it was a rain-delayed final played on the courts near Wimbledon)

Hi Anna, thanks for commenting! I totally overlooked that. I’m going to fix it in the post.
