Will There Be Room for Lipsky-Ram and Others at the Top?

January 10, 2012

Every year, you’ll see teams shake up their partnerships for whatever reason–lack of chemistry, desire to improve–despite past success. This year was no different, especially on the men’s side, as you had three top partnerships split up with the Olympics playing a big role, too.

The three new squads that were in action last week– Eric Butorac/Bruno Soares, Aisam Quereshi and Olympic hopefuls Mahesh Bhupathi/Rohan Bopanna–all had mixed results in tournament play. Probably the guy that made out best was Leander Paes, who won in Chennai with top 10 singles star Janko Tipsarevic.

All that shuffling around leaves a lot of room for teams near the top to break out, and that’s where Scott Lipsky and Rajeev Ram come in. The Americans got off to a solid start in ’12 with a semifinal showing in Chennai, and have been winning titles the past two seasons. Sticking together and making the push for London the goal could reap big benefits, particularly this season.

On the women’s side, you could take a look at the team of Raquel Kops-Jones and Abigail Spears. The veteran Americans made the finals of the tournament in Brisbane, also a nice start to the year at a big event. A solid season, which could be expected as they’ve been playing well the past few months, could see them hit new highs.

The room is there for players on the bubble to break through in 2012. Holding steady and letting others make the moves is the way to get there.
