Kveta Peschke and Katarina Srebotnik Take Year’s First Marquee Matchup

January 13, 2012

Well, we’re a few tournaments in and the year’s first ATP or WTA final between two elite teams has gone to Kveta Peschke and Katarina Srebotnik. The Czech/Slovenian pairing beat Americans Lisa Raymond and Liezel Huber in a thriller, 13-11 in the match tiebreak, for their ninth title together.

It’s a great showing for all four of the best doubles players of their generation, and terrific preparation with the Australian Open a couple of days away. They’re all past Grand Slam champions, and Raymond and Huber have each won Australian titles in the past with different partners.

You could very well be looking at a rematch in the finals as experience should trump over a lot of the singles players teaming up, or the younger doubles pairings who have had success.

This could be the start of a roll for Peschke and Srebotnik. But I’m sure Huber and Raymond will do all they can to make sure that doesn’t happen!
