Will It Be the A-Rod and Serena Show?

January 19, 2012

The mixed doubles draw is out at the Australian Open and it’s probably one of the most intriguing at the Slam level in years.

Well, actually, it may not really be that different from what we’ve seen in years past, except for a certain American squad by the name of Andy Roddick and Serena Williams near the top of the draw sheet!

It’s all about the Olympics for the pair with mixed doubles being an event at the Summer Games. They have to meet a few eligibility requirements first, plus get in some practice, then their hope is to be included among the 16-team field. They have the potential to do some damage in mixed, particularly with the amount of firepower they can bring.

They might not get a chance to showcase that in Melbourne, though, as they’re drawn to play the top seeds Daniel Nestor and Kveta Peschke in the first round, both of whom pay their bills–and do a good job of doing it–by playing dubs. However, if the Americans look beyond it being a hit-and-giggle, they could shake up a few teams.

Serena’s won Majors in the past playing mixed, completing the “Williams Slam” of 1998 when the sisters won all the coed competitions at the big four events. Roddick’s never had a breakthrough moment in doubles or mixed at a Major, but perhaps this could be his time?

At the least, it should all be entertaining!
