Kuznetsova and Zvonareva: Two Proving Better Than One

January 21, 2012

The Australian Open hadn’t exactly gone as planned for Russians Svetlana Kuznetsova and Vera Zvonareva with early-round singles losses already chalked up.

However, they’re making their mark on the doubles draw and have just knocked off the number-four seeds, Gisela Dulko and Flavia Pennetta, rallying to win in a third-set tiebreaker. It’s a great result for the pair and it’s nice to see the both of them balancing each other out for a great win.

It shouldn’t come as a surprise, I guess, that they’re playing well together. Between them, they’ve both won Grand Slam doubles titles and made multiple finals. That experience is more than enough to complement their ability, and it came in handy in their match against the number-four seeds.

The Russians can also take the court in a bit of a relaxed mode: The bulk of their bread-and-butter is earned on the singles court, so there’s not as much pressure to win as there is on a pair of doubles enthusiasts. Taking it easy and enjoying themselves is a rarity for the two, who have each had their share of emotional moments on the court!

Keeping those emotions in check could find them holding the big trophy at the end of the tournament.

Good call on Sveta & Vera taking home the title. After they beat “FlaviGise”, I kept my eye on those two, though to be fair I felt like Sveta was carrying the team the whole week.

Let’s see if they decide to play more leading up to London. Can’t imagine they wouldn’t be picked as a team now that they are Aussie Open Champs.

Hey Erik. You wanna know the sad thing? I figured they would both lose pretty early in singles, so why not put the effort going forward in the doubles?

Yeah, I think they would have to be considered a lock for London.
