A Dream Slam So Far for Makarova and Errani

January 23, 2012

Ekaterina Makarova of Russia and Italian Sara Errani have both been experiencing a Grand Slam for the ages, as they find themselves the most unlikely singles quarterfinalists.

They’re not doing too bad on the doubles court, either as both are in the quarters with their respective partners and countrywomen,  Alla Kudryavtseva and Roberta Vinci. The doubles run will end, though, for Makarova or Errani as their ties to the tournament break off in one point: The two teams play each other next!

Makarova and Kudryavtseva overcame a big roadblock in the second round: the top seeds Kveta Peschke and Katarina Srebotnik, when that pair had to quit the match. Errani and Vinci, seeded 11th, notched a minor upset when they defeated the eighth-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska and Daniela Hantuchova in straights.

Now it’s Russia vs. Italy for a spot in the semis. Regardless, it’s been a great Slam for Errani and Makarova, one they’re hoping will continue with a little help from their partners.
