Familiar Territory—to Say the Least—for the Bryan Brothers

January 25, 2012

And just like that, Bob and Mike Bryan are back in the men’s final at the Australian Open—even though overcoming that last barrier to get there was a doozy!

The twins beat Doubles Alley semifinal picks Horia Tecau and Robert Lindstedt, overcoming a match point in the second set and being 5-2 down in the final breaker. This marks the 37th time the Bryans have made it to the doubles final Down Under. (Joking, of course: it only seems like that many!)

It’s actually the eighth time in nine years they’ve played for the big trophy at the tournament, which essentially lifts Melbourne to “home-away-from-home” status. At the time of this posting, it’s not determined which team they’ll play: Those other semifinalists—Leander Paes/Radek Stepanek and Max “the Beast” Mirnyi/Daniel Nestor—are, to borrow Max’s nickname, beasts. I love this new Paes/Stepanek pairing and Mirnyi/Nestor are two legends of the game.

It should be an excellent final and either one of those two other pairings will have to put on a show to stop the Bryans run through Melbourne and race for the all-time men’s team Slam title.
