Mikhail Youzhny’s Double Take

February 6, 2012

Zagreb, Croatia, was not a bad place to be for Mikhail Youzhny this past week!

Not only did he win the singles title there, but the Russian veteran also captured the doubles crown, too. Partnering up with Marcos Baghdatis, the two ran through the final, 6-2, 6-2, over Ivan Dodig and Mate Pavic.

While most of Youzhny’s success has come in singles, by no means is he a slouch when it comes to playing dubs. That was the ninth title of his career, a very solid number for someone who’s been in the top 10 in singles.

Over the past couple of years, Youzhny has been playing doubles regularly with Ukrainian Sergiy Stakhovsky, and they’ve managed to win a couple of titles together. But Youzhny’s title run in Zagreb shows he’s capable of blending well with anyone as Baghdatis, one of the game’s most talented shotmakers, isn’t exactly known for his doubles prowess. Baghdatis was only playing in his second career doubles final.

It looks like Youzhny was the right partner to help him win that first title!
