Olympic Spirit Runs Through the Women’s Doubles in Miami

March 30, 2012

The finals at the Sony Ericsson Open will have a bit of national bragging rights on the line.

Russians Maria Kirilenko and Nadia Petrova will take on the winner of the match between the Italians Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci and Argentines Gisela Dulko and Paola Suarez. More all-countrywomen pairings have been evident on the WTA Tour this season with it being a Summer Olympics year. The lure of the Gold was even enough to get Suarez to come out of retirement.

Aside from Suarez, the rest of the players left in the draw are top 20 doubles players, and Paola should be able to count herself among them at this pace before the Games. It should make for some interesting competition in the months ahead, especially as all the women involved seem to be showing a level of commitment to each other.

And another note about the teams involved: All of them have solid clay-court games, which should serve them well in the months ahead.

How much that helps them out for the big tournaments at Wimbledon, though, is anyone’s guess!
