Fyrstenberg and Matkowski: Poles in Position for Bigger Things

May 11, 2012

The men’s semifinals are set in Madrid: Max Mirnyi/Daniel Nestor takes on “Polish Power” Mariusz Fyrstenberg/Marcin Matkowski, while Mahesh Bhupathi/Rohan Bopanna squares off against Robert Lindstedt/Horia Tecau.

These appear to be fine times for all four of these squads as all have entered the winners’ bracket at some point over the season.

Fyrstenberg and Matkowski just took their first title of the year recently in Barcelona and are aiming for more success in Spain. “Polish Power” has been playing some of the best ball on tour the past nine months: Aside from Barcelona, the three other finals they’ve made in that span have been pretty big ones. This year, they finished runner-up in Dubai, and in the latter half of 2012, the duo reached the finals of the U.S. Open and the year-end championships.

They’ve always been one of the more consistent teams over the past few years, regularly finishing up the season among the elite squads. But reaching that U.S. Open final has taken them to a new level and now, it looks like they can challenge for a regular top-four spot. A final-round showing in Madrid would be a nice push toward the French Open.
