The Serena Saga: What Will Happen in the Olympics in Mixed?

June 1, 2012

This wasn’t exactly Serena Williams’ finest Grand Slam tournament.

This year’s French Open is now over for her after her first-round loss in the mixed doubles playing alongside Bob Bryan. Now it’s time for her to turn her focus toward the grass-court season, including Wimbledon and the Summer Olympics.

The Olympics has been a major goal for Williams and she’s looking to play the mixed there, too. As a matter of fact, every U.S. male player under the sun wants her on their team, but it hasn’t been determined yet who will make up the squad.

The loss today with Bob Bryan isn’t a great indicator of their chemistry. They lost to last year’s U.S. Open runner-ups Gisela Dulko and Eduardo Schwank on their best surface. Conditions will be a lot different on the grass.

Probably any partner Williams ends up with would be a good choice: All of the options are big servers who play at their best on faster surfaces. Williams will be on a big hunt for Gold medals, and the mixed draw could be a great opportunity for that.
