Errani and Vinci Turn the Tables on Russia

June 8, 2012

This time, the Italians came through against a pair of Russian women in a Major.

Back at the Australian Open, Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci fell in the finals to Svetlana Kuznetsova and Vera Zvonareva. At the French Open, Errani and Vinci continued their romp through the clay-court season and got to the finals, taking on another Russian pair, Nadia Petrova and Maria Kirilenko.

As expected—by yours truly at least—Errani and Vinci won the title, rallying from a set down to win in three.

Both teams have been playing well all season, with big titles won along the way. However, Kirilenko and Petrova’s last three losses have come to Errani and Vinci, all on the clay.

But now that the dirt’s out of the way, it’s time to start gearing up for the grass. If I had to make a call, I’d go with Kirilenko and Petrova on the faster surfaces. However, Errani and Vinci have been winning so much—and have that runner-up finish at a hard-court Slam—that there could be no stopping them on the lawns in England.

This grass-court doubles season, with Wimbledon and the Olympics, could be one of the best ever. If anything, the all-countrywoman pairings have shown they’ve really gelled just in time.
